"I Receive The Message And You Will Play The Sender ..."
So, there are many, many things that I love about hip-hop. The thing that originally pulled me, however, in was it's use of samples. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about Puff Daddy or MC Hammer repeating the chorus of some eighties hit over and over again, I'm talking about creative use of samples.
It really hit me was when I was listening to Public Enemy's 'Fear of a Blck Planet'. The first time I heard the LP (this was back-in-the-day) it was almost too much for me to take. It's like I was drowning in this see of audio. Pieces sounded familiar (a James Brown drum fill there, an Eddie Murphy line there, an Eddie Haskell guitar riff over there ...) but it took a while to adjust to hearing everything in that presentation.
The best use of sampling, and to a lesser extent mash-ups (i.e., Girl Talk, etc.), is to create a whole new world out of the found sounds. Use the rhythms, melodies and lyrics of the past to create a collage for the present day. Allow the samples to play off what is being rapped about or - sometimes - serve as a counter-reaction to the point being made.
And ... if all that fails, no one ever went broke looping James Brown's 'Funky Drummer' ...
So, last year, I put together a podcast of Jay-Z samples. For all of the silliness that goes along with Jay-Z, J-Hova, Jigga, whatever he's calling himself this month - he's always allowed producers (Neptunes, Kanye, Swiss Beats) to lay down interesting tracks for him to flow on. This time, I decided to focus on a group that has done more to drill-down into a specific groove (almost of their own) than anyone else - Tribe Called Quest.
Almost from their very first album, Tribe has dug deep into crates to create this audio landscape of pop oddities, rock, soul and - most of all - deep jazz cuts for Tribe and Phife to rap over. This podcast is ~90 minutes of songs, snippets and grooves that they built their vibe on. Hope you like it.
